Crime Stoppers of Pike Co. starts their 15th fiscal year September 1st with the following slate of officers:

President Ruth Anne Liehr
Vice President Bill Craven
Treasurer Wayne Forgy
Secretary Virginia Bradshaw & Pat Waters

Organized in 1993, the local organization is fully certified  by Illinois State Crime Stoppers  and operated locally by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Of the officers and committee chairmen of the founding group, only one member, Leslie Hayden, maintains an active role in the present organization.

Calls to the hotline - 217-285-1500 - are anonymous - no caller ID, no recording, no star-69 call-back - and answered by dispatchers of the Pike Co. Sheriff's Dept.  The caller does not have to give his name -  he's given a  number and asked to call back within a certain length of  time to check on disposition of the tip given.  If the tip leads to an arrest, the caller is eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

During the fiscal year 9-1-07 through 8-31-08 the local Board of Directors approved $2,450 in cash rewards.

Crime Stoppers operates successfully by cooperation with local media, volunteers and law enforcement.  Fugitive-of-the-Week notices are published free of charge in all county newspapers and radio station WBBA broadcasts  public service announcements.  Crime Stoppers receives no tax money and is funded entirely by donations.  Sheriff's Deputy Dan Brennecke serves as Coordinator, having recently  replaced Deputy David Greenwood who served in this capacity for several years.

In addition to providing cash rewards for tips solving crimes, the local group has purchased digital cameras and portable breathalyzer units for the Pike Co. Sheriff's Dept.,  Pittsfield and Barry City Police, and anatomically correct dolls  used by the State Attorney's Child Advocacy Program in interviewing children who are victims of molestation.   President Liehr has announced plans to sponsor an Internet Safety presentation this fall aimed at  educating parents and students of potential dangers on the worldwide web.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the local Crime Stoppers, call 285-1500 and someone will contact you with information.
